Welcoming a newborn is one of the most exciting times of your life. However, it involves countless amounts of preparation and planning. One of the first things to do is create a nurturing and safe environment in the nursery.
As parents of two, we will walk you through the process of preparing a nursery for a newborn.
This post is all about simplifying the process of preparing a nursery for a newborn.
How to Prepare a Nursery for a Newborn
#1 When should nursery planning begin?
Confirming that you’re pregnant is an amazing feeling of excitement. When is it too early to set up the nursery? This is a personal preference, but the planning can start soon after you find out you’re pregnant.
#2 Picking a Theme
Choosing the perfect theme for your baby’s nursery can be fun and exciting. Consider your personal preferences in both style and color.
When picking a theme, you can make it gender specific and wait until you know those details. You can also make it gender-neutral or a combination of both. For example, we hoped and planned on having two children. We knew we wanted to use the same room for the nursery for both children. So, we painted the walls a gender-neutral light green, but we waited to add other decorations later once we knew the gender. For the big purchase items, we intentionally selected gender-neutral items to be reused for baby #2, regardless of gender. At the end of the day, you should choose something that fits you and your family best. Some like a little more peaceful, and some like a little more playful. There are plenty of options to choose the perfect theme for you.
#3 Nursery Essentials to Purchase
Before purchasing any nursery items, it is important to plan the room’s layout. You will want to measure your space for furniture and decor items. How do you want it to flow? Be sure there is room to open drawers and closet doors with the set-up you choose.

#4 Safety
Even though your baby isn’t even born yet, when setting up the nursery, it is essential to think about when your baby crawls and climbs up everything. You may not realize, but once your child is mobile, they will be curious about everything. They will touch, chew on, and climb everything without understanding what could be a safety hazard. Plan for the safety items!

Magnetic Cabinet and drawer latches are perfect for all around the house. We used them on our bathroom vanity and everything in reach in the kitchen. Even once your child grows up, these will still be useful for keeping curious minds out of cleaning supplies, medication, or other potentially dangerous items.

The CPSC, or Consumer Product Safety Commission, is great for checking for recalls on previously purchased items. Thankfully, Amazon has this functionality integrated into its site and will alert you on any recall of items you purchased from them.
Changing Table Safety
Never leave your baby, even for a second, while they are on the changing table. Make sure you have everything you need before you lay the baby down. If you’ve forgotten something, ask for help or carry your baby with you to get that item. Babies can wiggle or roll off of the table in an instant, so it’s best to mitigate that from being a possibility.
Furniture Safety
Secure all furniture to the wall – Once your child becomes mobile, they will begin pulling up on items. You’ll need to secure all furniture to the wall to ensure the furniture doesn’t tip over on top of them. There are a variety of ways to do this, which either involve screws or super strong adhesive. We like the certainty of securing the item to the wall by screwing it into a wall stud. This minimal damage can be fixed later. Strong adhesive options also work but could rip off from the wall or pull off the drywall paper when attempting to remove them. Safety first.
Conclusion
In conclusion, preparing a nursery for a newborn is an exciting journey filled with anticipation and joy. By carefully choosing essential nursery items, prioritizing safety, and adding personal preferences with decor and accessories, you can create a nurturing environment for your little one to thrive in.
Best wishes as you create the perfect space for your newborn’s arrival.
